A brief overview
The first clay model dates back to as far as the 1200 - 1400 BC. The first piece of clay pottery was made completely by accident when it fell into and was therefore transformed into a glass like material. There are three common types of the clay they are the following:
- Earthenware: A common clay, containing many minerals, such as iron oxide (rust), and in it's raw state may contain some traces of sand or small fragments of rock.
- Stoneware: This is a hard and durable clay that is fired up to temperatures of 1205 - 1260 C. Historically this clay was used for crocks and jugs but more is used to create dinnerware.
- Kaolin: This can also be known as china clay, it has very few impurities. This is why it's the main ingredient for porcelain.
